What is VietWill?

VietWill is group of young professionals, university students and alumni, who have compassion and love for Vietnam.

The story of our modest beginnings:

vietwill logoIt was in an afternoon in December 2007, an email was circulated on VietCal.org mailing list about the student led protests taking place in Vietnam against the Chinese government for establishing the administrative city of Sansha to administer the Paracel and Spratly Islands of Vietnam. Vietnamese students and alumni on VietCal.org mailing list were enraged no less than their counterparts in Hanoi and Saigon. Emails were sent back and forth flooding each others' mailbox with one concern: "What can we do?" One person said, "I know what to do. Let's bring this issue to the international attention and create pressure on China. Let's put money into a pot and print t-shirts, brochure and distribute it to the public." Another person said, "Let's create a google group for those who care to work on this idea." A few minutes later, Vietlove google group was created. Two hours later, 35 member were enlisted, and $3000 were raised. And after many email discussions and surveys amongst Vietlove google group and their friends, 3 months later, VietWill.org was born. An official website has been erected, and the Vietnamese Bronze Drum has been adopted as the official logo for the group.

VietWill members include people from all over the world including, Washington DC, St. Louise, Berkeley, San Jose, San Diego, Santa Clara, Houston, Westminster, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and England. Ethnicity are mostly of Vietnamese origin, as well as Caucasian, American, African American, French, Indian, and Laotian.

And now, the struggle begins as VietWill members hope to galvanize one another and YOU to join in the effort to defend our beloved Motherland of Vietnam.

The Trong Dong (Bronze Drum) is the soul of Vietnamese culture. And despite China's attempt to claim the drum as of Chinese origin, experts and scholars have definitively refuted such notions. The first drum was invented three thousand years ago in northern Vietnam by the Lac Viet, the ancient ancestors of modern day Vietnamese people. It was used for religious ceremonies, for rallying men to war, and for other acitivities in society.
